The organizers of the IEM Global Challenge have regretfully reported that they have to shift the tournament online. Although the championship was meant to be the first offline competition since the pandemic and to run in Cologne, the current events brought the hosts to change their plans. Due to the second wave of coronavirus and consequent restrictions, the upcoming championship will be held as one global online division. Additionally, it will be included in Intel Grand Slam.

Giving the technical matter serious consideration, the tournament operator promises to find and provide special gaming accommodations so that the participants can gather together in one place and play without distractions and delays.

So, in a nutshell, the event will run on December 15-20. Eight best participants from North America and Europe will participate in the competition, among them are current victors of DreamHack Open Fall Europe and IEM New York North America (FURIA and Heroic), the future finalists of IEM Beijing EU and NA. It’s the ESL Ranking that will determine four more participants: two leading teams from Europe, another best one from America, and the strongest one from CIS. The partakers will contend for the overall prize fund of $500,000, with the first place award amounting to $200,000.

The championship will consist of two phases: the group stage and the playoffs. During the first stage, the teams will be divided into two groups to play bo3 matches according to the double-elimination system. The top four participants will reach the single-elimination playoffs to continue fighting in the semifinals, which will determine two finalists to encounter in the Grand Final.
