Roulette Betting Odds

Roulette Betting Odds

If you are starting out with online casino games, then roulette may well be appealing due to the fact that the odds at a roulette table are often more favourable in comparison with other games. The only thing that can cause some confusion is the different types of roulette bets available and the odds attached to each of these bets. However, once you have got your heads around these bets, then you’re ready to go.

The Basics of Roulette

Although there are plenty of different variants of the roulette game, such as European Roulette, French Roulette and American Roulette, the basics of the game are the same:

You place your bet by putting your chips on your chosen number or bets.
The roulette croupier will then spin the roulette wheel and throw the ball into action.
The ball comes to rest in a number block and the winning number is revealed.

Different Types of Roulette Bets

There are two different types of bets – inside and outside bets, which all come with different odds. Often, if a player is looking to make some money on the game, they will opt for an inside bet.

Inside Bets

These are the bets that can be found at the centre of the table, where the numbers are. There are several different inside bets that you can make:
A Straight Bet – a bet placed on one single number.
A Split Bet – a bet placed in between two numbers, covering both.
A Street Bet – placing the bet on three numbers in a row.
A Corner bet – a chip placed in the corner, covering four numbers.
A Basket Bet – a wager placed on 00, 0, 1, 2and 3 together.
A Line Bet – A wager placed on all the numbers on two rows.

The Payouts of these bets vary, but are much bigger than the outside bets:

Straight bet – payout 35/1
Split bet – payout 17/1
Street Bet – payout 11/1
Corner Bet – payout 8/1
Basket Bet – payout 6/1
Line Bet – 5/1

Outside Bets

If you like the idea of hitting the roulette table with minimal risk, you may well opt for an outside bet, in which one chip can cover a lot more options – but the payout is a lot smaller to reflect this. Here are the different outside bets available:

An Even/Odd Bet – Betting on whether the ball will land on an even or odd number.
Black/Red Bet – a bet on whether the ball will land on a red or black number.
1-18 Bet – Betting on whether the ball will land on a number between 1-18.
19-36 Bet – Betting on whether the ball will land on a number between 19-36
A Dozen Bet – A bet on whether the ball will land on either 1-12, 13-24 or 25-36.

As you can see, most of these bets are straightforward 50/50 bets apart from the Dozens bet, which is a 33/33/33 bet. The odds and payouts reflect this:

Odd/Even Bet – payout 1/1
Red/Black Bet – payout 1/1
1-18 Bet – payout 1/1
19-36 Bet – payout 1/1
Dozen Bet – payout 2/1

House Edge

You do need to take into account the house edge, which depends on the roulette variant you choose. In 50/50 bets, the single zero gives the casino a house edge because this is neither one nor the other, so you have a slightly less than 50% chance of winning. American roulette has single 0 and double 0 – which doubles the house edge as both of these are neither one nor the other.

How to Beat the Odds

If you are looking for more chance to win, then the more outcomes you cover with one wager gives you more chance of getting a winning bet, so if you are a little more risk-averse then this could suit you more. If your goal is just to win your bet, then corner bets and outside bets are definitely more suitable.
