Several of tennis’s greatest stars will be absent at the 2021 US Open, which started on Monday. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams won’t participate because of injuries, but there are still many talented tennis professionals who are ready to play.

Men’s singles predictions

This year Novak Djokovic has already won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. Therefore, this is no wonder that he is the favourite to become the winner in New York. Djokovic failed to win a medal at the Olympic Games after losing to Alexander Zverev in the semifinals and Pablo Carreno Busta in the bronze medal match, but he was not quite healthy due to a shoulder injury. This time, he should at least reach the final. Daniil Medvedev is also in great shape, just like Zverev, who got a gold medal from Tokyo Games. Therefore the men tournament is promising to be intriguing.

Women’s singles predictions

As for the women tournament, Ashley Barty is the favourite to win the competition. However, all significant tennis competitions this year were won by different participants. Naomi Osaka won the Australian Open, Barbora Kreichikova got the gold at the French Open, Barty became a winner at Wimbledon, and Belinda Bencic brought home a gold medal from the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo. Any one of them could break through and get the title now.

The 25-year-old Australian world No. 1 Barty won the Western and Southern Open earlier this month. She has never progressed beyond the fourth round of the US Open but is determined to do it this time. Arina Sabalenko, the world second racket, is also one of the favourites to win the US Open. The 23-year-old Belarusian played in the Wimbledon semifinals. Osaka is defending US Open champion and plays in her first Grand Slam since she pulled out of the French Open to focus on her mental health. Osaka did represent her country in the Olympic Games but lost to Mark Vondrousova in the third round.
