Where is esports most popular?

When the average person thinks of esports they think of the United States. They picture American teenagers playing games in their bedrooms or competing in massive stadiums. The average gamer on the other hand knows that the US is not the centre of competitive gaming universe and does not come close when compared to some other esports countries.

5. Denmark

Denmark is a prosperous but cold country. Its youngsters are generally well educated and affluent and the country, on the whole, has always been quick to adopt new technologies and to make these available to everyone.

This attitude has led to a surprising surge in esports in Denmark. The Scandinavian country is home to some huge esport teams, including the Copenhagen Wolves or Astralis, and they have one of the highest player-to-earnings ratios in the world.

4. The United States of America

While the US is not the biggest esports country in the world, it is one of the top five. There are over 300 million people in this country and it has a rich history with video games, as well as the money and means to produce the best players and host the biggest tournaments.

Games like Call of Duty and Fortnite have helped to propel esports forward in the United States and have also given birth to gaming organizations like FaZe Clan, which has a large following online and competes at the highest level for numerous games. The US is also home to the Evil Geniuses, Cloud9, and countless other top esport teams.

3. Sweden

This is the second Scandinavian country on this list and one that’s here for many of the same reasons as Denmark. But there is more to it than that, as Sweden is also home to Dreamhack, one of the biggest esport and gaming events in the world, and it’s also where the world’s biggest gaming Youtuber, PewDiePie, was born and raised.

Dota 2 has a particularly large following in Sweden, but there are Swedes playing all major esports and they can be found on multiple top-earner lists.

2. South Korea

A few of you may have expected South Korea to top this list, as this is where esports got their big start. South Korean gamers were superstars long before Americans and Scandinavians and this country hosted huge StarCraft events before games like Call of Duty and Hearthstone got their big breaks.

However, South Korea has been overtaken by another esport giant in recent years…

1. China

The number one esports country by far is China. It has been said that over 200 million Chinese people play esports games on a regular basis, ensuring there is a steady supply of top players willing to compete in the world’s biggest events.

They dominate esports like League of Legends, Dota 2, Hearthstone and countless others and while they are a relatively unseen presence in games like Call of Duty and FIFA, they are making an impression there as well and we could soon see Chinese players leading the way in every single esports competition.
