Who are the favourites to win Wimbledon this year?

We barely had time to celebrate the victory of the legendary Spaniard Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros when it’s time to look forward and make predictions for the next Grand Slam tournament! The next couple of weeks will feature the most traditional tennis competition, bringing lots of bright moments and sports betting opportunities! Yes, we’re talking about Wimbledon Championships!

About the tournament

The performance will take place in London, between June 27 and July 10. The event will gather the strongest players on the planet and will determine the champs in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. As usual, the singles games receive the most attention among fans.

The upcoming edition will be slightly different from the previous ones. Firstly, the organizers announced that, for the first time, the competition will run over 14 days, without the traditional day-off after the first six days. And secondly, the competition was deprived of a point earning system, so it will become a bit friendly, although it will not lose its legendary status and prestige!

As you know, the great peculiarity of the British tournament is that the matches are played on natural grass, with all that this entails. A thin layer of grass forces players to adapt to the irregular bounce of the ball and the speed it acquires compared to other surfaces. This explains why players with excellent serve and volley have an extra advantage here. This should be taken into account when betting on tennis online! So who is the king of the grasscourt? And what participants should be paid attention to when betting on Wimbledon online? Cyber.bet is here to provide some insights!

Favorites to win Wimbledon tennis championship

Men’s Singles

Rafael Nadal won two Grand Slam tennis tournaments in a row in 2022. But is the Spaniard ready to continue his winning streak on a different surface? Can he become Wimbledon champion? Experts in online tennis betting are still very doubtful about it, as evidenced by the odds on the winner in the new edition of the tournament. At the moment, Nadal’s chances of triumph in Britain are estimated at only 11%. Nadal is behind not only the main favorite, Novak Djokovic, who has a 40% chance of winning the title, but also a representative of a new generation of Spanish tennis – Carlos Alcaraz. Nadal’s young compatriot has a 14% chance of success.

Do such prognoses seem surprising? Not really. The grass courts are not Rafa’s favorite type of surface, and we should not forget about his serious health problems. At the end of the last calendar year, the player was not even sure he could enter the court in 2022. During the Roland Garros 2022, he repeatedly admitted that his foot injury continued to make itself felt.

As for the Serbian champion, last season, he performed ultimately great. He lost only two games throughout the tournament and brilliantly defeated Matteo Berrettini in the final. However, he has not had a good start to this year. First, he was excluded from the Australian Open. Then he was defeated by Nadal in Paris. And finally, just recently, he has been overtaken by Medvedev and Zverev in the ATP ranking. Still, the Serb is the favorite number one since, firstly, he has long demonstrated his mastery on a grass court; secondly, his main rival, Medvedev, won’t participate in the competition this time.

The young Carlos Alcaraz is the sensation of this tennis season. Although it is difficult to predict how his play is going to unfold on such a surface, expectations about him have not stopped growing. According to the specialists, his aggressive style seems like it could fit perfectly on the grass, which favors fast play or drop shots. The Murcian still has a certain ‘wow’ factor. Everyone talks about him, but not many players have faced him.

It is worth noting that in addition to the three major favorites mentioned above (Djokovic, Alcaraz, and Nadal), the analysts also include such players as Félix Auger, Matteo Berrettini, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Denis Shapovalov, Nick Kyrgios, and Hubert Hurkacz in the list of contenders for the title.

Women’s Singles

Unlike the men’s draw, the women’s competition has no clear favorite like Djokovic. It’s where yesterday’s juniors, whom we’ve never heard of before, may break through at any time. With five different champions in the last five editions (Williams, Muguruza, Kerber, Halep, and Barty), the WTA circuit is inconsistent. One thing is for sure – the tension among the women will be at the maximum!

Polish Iga Świątek seems to be the most qualified to win this season. The world number one recently won Roland Garros with her 35th consecutive victory in the finals. At this tournament, her chances of taking the trophy are almost twice lower than in Paris, though. The thing is, she has not won a single competition on grass and has never progressed beyond 16th place in London. It’s Emma Raducanu that may prevent her from winning. The British player is still stirring the tennis world after winning the US Open, and Wimbledon will be her home tournament. The problem is that Emma was recently injured and did not even finish her match in Nottingham against Viktorija Golubic.

Wimbledon betting odds also speak in favor of Simona Halep. The Romanian player won Wimbledon in 2018, defeating Serena Williams in the final. She is in good shape – shortly before the new tournament, she reached the semifinals in Birmingham.

The Roland Garros runner-up, Cori Gauff, having reached the semifinals in Berlin, performs strongly on the grass. So she can be considered a worthy contender for the Wimbledon title. It’s hard to count legendary Serena Williams out. Although the 40-year-old athlete has not played for a year, she has the experience and the class to edge multiple opponents.

Among other strong performers worthy of attention are two-time champ Petra Kvitová, Garbiñe Muguruza, who gained the title in 2017, and Paula Badosa, who reached number two in the WTA ranking in April 2022. Tunisian Ons Jabeur can be added to this list as well. She has been demonstrating outstanding results on different surfaces this season.

As usual, the women’s circuit is always more open, and anything can happen. You shouldn’t discount the possibility that lower-ranked athletes could win the championship. It is Wimbledon that is famous for its interesting turn of events. And the return of such a legend as Serena Williams will add even more intrigue. The rest of the participants will be waiting for her with fear!
