ESL One Birmingham – Online: Group Stage Recap. OG lost six out of seven matches, Secret interrupted their winning streak

ESL One Birmingham – Online group stages came to their end in Europe, the Americas, and China. Current The International winners OG lost six out of seven games and are out of the event. Team Secret interrupted their 20 maps winning streak and but still won their group.

In the merged Europe and CIS region, 16 teams were divided into two groups, from which two teams headed to play-off upper bracket while third and fourth-placed teams qualified to lower bracket. The biggest flop of the tournament was Team OG’s result. Reigning TI champions were playing with their full roster for the first time since ESL One Los Angeles qualifiers. The biggest upset of the group stage happened when Team Unique beat Team Secret, which won nine matches in a row before with the aggregate scoreline at 20:0. It is worth mentioning that after this match, Secret won the next four series without dropping a single map and took the first place in Group A. Nigma, who lost only to Secret finished the second while Vikin.gg and Team Liquid took the third and the fourth places respectively. In the decisive matches, Vikin.gg beat Team Family and Liquid clinched a win over Natus Vincere, who played with their experimental roster. Just before the tournament, they substituted Semion “CeMaTheSlayeR” Krivulia with ex-Vega captain Vitaliy “so bad” Oshmankevich. NAVI finished the group stage with three wins and four losses.

In Group B, six teams were fighting for their placements until the very end. NiP could claim the first place by beating Virtus.Pro Prodigy, but they lost and finished in sixth place only! Alliance and Virtus.Pro Prodigy themselves headed to the upper bracket. HellRaisers and FlyToMoon finished in front of Cyber Legacy and NiP by additional criteria, and start their way in the play-off from the lower bracket.

Speaking about the Americas, CRAZY showed a great result as they won all their matches. Quincy Crew finished the second by losing only to CR4ZY. Evil Geniuses managed to take only the third place, and they were close to not even qualifying for the play-off. There were down 0:1 in the match versus Thunder Predator, but the Peruvian team faced some issues with an internet connection and was not able to fix it in time. Therefore, EG got the def win. Business associates finished the fourth, while beastcoast stayed the fifth.

In China, eight teams were divided into two groups. In Group B, EHOME surprisingly could not qualify for the play-off as they stayed the third. CDEC took the first place while Invictus Gaming stayed the second. In Group A, LGD Gaming won all their three matches, and RNG took the second play-off spot.

In Southeast Asia, the whole tournament was over on May 31. Team Fnatic became the crowned champions yet again as they did not lose a single online event during coronavirus pandemic. BOOM Esports took the second place, Geek Fam, which not long ago won Cyber.Bet: Spring Series, stayed the third.
