Round 16 of the UEFA Champions League has come to its end, with the last return match having taken place on March 17. Now we know the complete list of the teams qualified for the quarterfinals:
- Bayern Munich
- Chelsea
- Borussia Dortmund
- Liverpool
- Manchester City
- Paris Saint-Germain
- Porto
- Real Madrid
The first ones to progress to the quarterfinals were Borussia Dortmund and Porto. Borussia Dortmund gained a 3:2 victory over Sevilla in the first leg match, and their second encounter ended in a draw, which ensured the Germans’ advance to the quarterfinals. In the first leg, Porto beat Juventus with a 2:1 score. Juventus won back 3:2 in the second one; however, it was not enough to move to the quarterfinals.
Liverpool twice beat Leipzig 2:0 and confidently entered the quarterfinals.
Paris Saint-Germain’s 4:1 victory over Barcelona in the first leg and their second drawn game let the French make it into the quarterfinals with a 5:2 win on aggregate.
As for Real Madrid – Atalanta pair, Madrid turned out to be stronger in the first leg with a 1:0 close score. In the return match, Atalanta had started the game confidently, willing to win back, but ‘missed the boat’. Having managed to pull only one goal back, the Italians dropped out of the League and gave way to the Spaniards to move forward.
Borussia Mönchengladbach hopelessly lost to Manchester City in the first match; the English gave them no chance during the second encounter as well. Thus, Manchester City reached the quarterfinals with a total score of 4:0.
There is no wonder that Bayern Munich achieved a decisive victory over Lazio Roma with a 6:2 total score in two matches. Bayern Munich is performing strongly throughout the UEFA Champions League. There is no doubt that the Bavarians are undeniable tournament favorites and have every chance to win the League!
The Chelsea vs. Atletico match determined the last UEFA Champions League quarterfinal participant. Although in the first match, the Londoners won with a slender 1:0 advantage, in the second one they did show paces, smashing Atletico 2:0! After the change of the head coach, Chelsea plays quality in every match. Led by Thomas Tuchel, the English club has not sustained a single defeat and continues on the course!
