Vietnam to miss out on LoL World Championship 2020

Vietnam to miss out on LoL World Championship 2020

In early September, it was announced that Riot Games, an organizer of the LoL Championship, made a decision to change the format of the upcoming event. These changes affect only the play-in and group stages. That is, only ten teams will participate in play-in rather than twelve as originally planned. Two groups, each of five players, will fight in Round Robin format. The winners will advance to play-offs. The losers will continue to combat in order to determine two more contestants of the play-off stage.

This reformation is a result of the stated non-participation of Vietnamese teams in the upcoming tournament. As per the participant list determined earlier, two teams from Vietnam (including Team Flash and the winner of GAM Esports vs. EVOS Esports game) were going to take part in the tournament. However, they will be unable to attend the event. To recall, World Championship 2020 will take place on September 25 in Shanghai. However, due to COVID-19 precautions in Vietnam, participants will not be able to re-enter their homeland if they leave for China. After considering various possible options of Vietnam’s participation in the tournament, Riot Games had to make a tough choice to hold games without Vietnamese players. The organizer decided to bring about the changes mentioned above rather than replace the teams.
